It’s happening.

If you’ve ever driven past the area and seen litter building up along the riverbanks, plastic caught in the reeds, or the water looking unhealthy, then you already understand why this matters. The Soet River should be a natural lifeline for the community—not a dumping ground.

Why the Soet River matters

A river isn’t just “water in a channel.” It affects everything around it:

Health and hygiene: Pollution attracts pests, creates bad smells, and can increase the risk of illness—especially for kids who play nearby.

The environment: When plastic and waste enter the river system, it doesn’t just disappear—it travels, breaks down into smaller pieces, and harms wildlife.

Community pride: When an area looks neglected, it starts to feel neglected. A cleaner river can change how people feel about their neighbourhood.

What this grant helps us do

This funding gives us the ability to take action in a proper, structured way—not just “one clean-up and done,” but a real campaign with momentum.

Our plan is to:

organise clean-up days with volunteers who are ready to get their hands dirty for a good cause

remove and dispose of waste correctly, so we’re not just moving trash from one place to another

document everything (before-and-after photos, volunteer registers, waste logs), because impact should be visible and measurable

create awareness content—videos that show the reality of the pollution and the change that’s possible when people come together

work with the community so this doesn’t end with one clean-up, but becomes a shift in mindset

Our bigger vision

Yes, we want to remove waste. But the bigger goal is to stop the pollution at the source.

That means building long-term awareness and encouraging responsibility—because a clean river won’t stay clean if people keep dumping. We want the Soet River to become a place the community can be proud of again, and we want this project to prove something simple:

When the community and support structures work together, real change is possible.

How you can be part of it

If you’ve ever wanted to get involved in something meaningful, this is it. Whether you’re someone who can volunteer, share our posts, help spread awareness, or simply encourage others to care—you’re part of the solution.

This grant is a big win, but it’s also a big responsibility. And we’re ready.

The Soet River clean-up starts now. Let’s make a change—together.

She doesn't ask for help. She doesn't expect praise. She simply does what she feels called to do: serve those in need.

Her small backyard space transforms into a beacon of hope every week, where elderly residents, jobseekers, and children gather for a warm plate and an even warmer encounter. When we heard about Mervie’s Soup Kitchen, the message was consistent:

"She doesn’t have much, but she gives it all."
"She’s been doing this for years, even when no one was watching."
"Mervie has the biggest heart in our area."

That was enough for us.

It’s easy to overlook the smallest feeding schemes. But in truth, these are often the most authentic—run not for numbers or recognition, but for love. And that’s why Mervie had to be our fourth hero. Because she reminded us what real service looks like.

The Day of the Visit: A Humble Yet Powerful Gathering

When we arrived at Mervie’s home, the atmosphere was calm, almost understated. But the moment we stepped into her kitchen, we felt it: purpose. Giant pots were already on the stove. Rice bubbling. Soup simmering. And Mervie? Stirring with a quiet smile and unmatched grace.

We came prepared to help. Together with Food Socks, we delivered a full spread of ingredients: lentils, vegetables, rice, meat, seasonings, and packaging supplies. Enough to feed every person who would arrive—and then some.

But what struck us most wasn’t the food—it was the way she worked. Efficient. Focused. Joyful.

“This is my favourite day of the week,” she told us. “Because I get to give. But when you look closer, you realize that number doesn't tell the full story.

Many of the people she serves take food home to family members. Some are single mothers. Others are elderly individuals sharing meals with grandchildren. That 50? It’s really closer to 150 when you consider the households she touches.

Each plate is carefully prepared. Each portion packed with intention. She serves not only a meal but a message: “You matter.”

On our visit, we helped her prepare and distribute those meals. Together, we took a stand against pollution and neglect, working side by side to restore one of South Africa’s most damaged waterways.

The Soet River, once a lifeline for its surrounding communities, has tragically earned the reputation of being the most polluted river in South Africa. Years of illegal dumping, chemical waste, and household litter have turned this vital ecosystem into a danger zone for both people and wildlife. The cleanup aimed not only to remove the waste but to reignite a shared sense of responsibility for protecting our environment.

💪 A Community Coming Together

Volunteers from local neighborhoods, schools, and environmental organizations came equipped with gloves, masks, and an unshakable spirit. What started as a daunting task soon became a collective movement of hope. Together, we collected tons of waste — from plastic bottles and tires to hazardous materials — uncovering the river’s natural flow once again.

Representatives from the Western Cape Government provided logistical support, while the Soet River Catchment Forum shared critical insight into the long-term rehabilitation plans for the area. Making a Change contributed manpower, community mobilization, and environmental education — reminding everyone that real transformation begins with awareness and action.

🌱 More Than Just a Cleanup

This event was about more than picking up litter; it was about making a statement. It was a message that says: we refuse to let our rivers die. By coming together, we demonstrated what can be achieved when citizens, organizations, and government collaborate toward a shared goal.

As part of the ongoing Soet River restoration project, future initiatives will focus on:

Educating communities about waste management and sustainable practices.

Strengthening monitoring systems to prevent illegal dumping.

Planting indigenous vegetation along the riverbanks to support biodiversity.

In the heart of South Africa, where inequality, hunger, and hardship continue to grip so many communities, there are everyday heroes who rise above their circumstances and become a beacon of hope. On a day that reminded us all of the power of compassion and community, Making a Change had the honour of visiting Shirley’s Giving Hands—a feeding scheme that has become a lifeline for countless children in the area.

It was a day of giving, of feeding, and of celebrating humanity. We were there not only to lend a helping hand in preparing and distributing meals but also to recognize one extraordinary woman who has been quietly changing lives: Lecille Poole, the driving force behind Shirley’s Giving Hands. It was our privilege to present her with Making a Change’s very first Community Hero Trophy, a small token of appreciation for someone who has given her entire heart to the people she serves.

The Day That Moved Us All

When our team arrived early that morning, the sun was only beginning to warm the streets. But even in those early hours, the energy at Shirley’s Giving Hands was already palpable. Children began gathering, some barefoot, others shy but smiling, all waiting patiently for what they knew would be the only meal they might receive that day.

We were immediately welcomed by Lecille and her team of volunteers—humble people working with very little but giving so much. The first thing you notice when meeting Lecille is the calm strength in her eyes. She’s not someone chasing recognition. She’s not funded by massive donors. She is simply a woman who refuses to let her community go hungry.

That morning, over 400 children were fed thanks to her efforts—and thanks to generous donations and supplies from Making a Change supporters and our sponsors. As pots bubbled and steam filled the small kitchen area, we joined in to chop vegetables, stir giant cauldrons, plate servings, and help wherever we could. But as much as we gave, we received even more in return.

There is something deeply humbling about serving food into the hands of a child who is visibly hungry—someone who smiles at you as though you just handed them the world. It’s a moment that forces you to pause. It’s a moment that changes you.

Why We Chose Lecille Poole as a Community Hero

The decision to honour Lecille Poole as our first official Community Hero was an easy one. Shirley’s Giving Hands was named in honour of Lecille’s late mother, Shirley—a woman who believed in feeding children before feeding herself. That spirit lives on through Lecille.

Without government support, without fanfare, and often without enough resources, Lecille feeds hundreds every single week. She’s built trust in her area. She’s created something sacred—a space where children feel safe, loved, and full.

She doesn’t just give food. She gives dignity.

That’s why we created the Community Hero Award. South Africa is full of unsung champions who work quietly in the shadows. Their stories rarely make headlines, but they’re the ones holding communities together. With this award, we want to amplify those voices and shine a light on their work.

Presenting Lecille with the trophy was emotional. She was moved to tears—as were we. But she quickly shifted the attention, pointing out the volunteers beside her and the people who help make Shirley’s Giving Hands what it is. In true Lecille fashion, she made sure we all knew this was a team effort.

But make no mistake: she is the heartbeat of it all.

A Crisis We Cannot Ignore

As joyful and heart warming as the day was, it also revealed something far more sobering: the scale of hunger in our country is growing.

South Africa’s food insecurity crisis is real, and it is urgent. According to Stats SA, nearly 20% of households report inadequate or severely inadequate access to food. That’s millions of people going to bed hungry. And it’s not just about food—it’s about the long-term effects on children: stunted growth, difficulty concentrating in school, and diminished hope for a better future.

One of the hardest moments during our visit was seeing children arrive late, asking if there was any food left. For some, the answer was no. It shattered us. It reminded us that while we can celebrate the meals we served, the work has only just begun.

No child should have to fight for food. No parent should have to choose between buying a loaf of bread and electricity. Yet this is the daily reality for many in our country.

Making a Change: More Than a Name

When we started Making a Change, our mission was simple: highlight the people and organizations doing real work on the ground, and provide whatever support we could. We knew that change doesn’t come from big speeches or viral posts—it comes from action.

But Making a Change has grown into more than just a project. It’s become a movement. It’s a way of thinking. It’s a refusal to accept the status quo.

Through partnerships, fundraising drives, volunteer outreach, and content creation, we aim to not only support these community initiatives but also tell their stories to the world. Because when people know what's happening, they care. And when they care, they act.

Our visit to Shirley’s Giving Hands is just one of many. But it’s one that will stay with us forever.

What We Learned That Day

If we had to summarize the lessons of that day into a few powerful truths, they would be these:

One person can truly make a difference – Lecille didn’t wait for funding. She didn’t wait for perfect circumstances. She saw a need and stepped up.

Hunger doesn’t look the same everywhere – Some kids looked fine. Some laughed and played. But they were still hungry. Hunger hides in plain sight.

The community still has hope – Despite all odds, despite poverty, crime, and unemployment, people showed up to help. Volunteers. Neighbours. Local kids helping serve food to younger ones. There is still a heartbeat of kindness in this country.

Recognition matters – When Lecille held that trophy, it wasn’t just about her. It was a symbol that people see her work. That she matters. That change is recognized.

There’s still so much more to do – We left with full hearts, but also heavy ones. Because for every Shirley’s Giving Hands, there are a dozen others struggling in silence. Our work is not finished.

What’s Next for Us

This visit was just the beginning of a new chapter. Making a Change will be rolling out a full Community Hero Series, where we continue to identify, spotlight, and support individuals like Lecille who are reshaping their communities. We’ll be producing short documentaries, blog posts, and behind-the-scenes content to amplify their stories and attract more support.

We’re also committing to monthly visits and donations to feeding schemes across the Western Cape and beyond. From food drives to school partnerships to corporate sponsorships, we’re scaling our efforts—and we’re inviting you to be part of it.

Because change needs all of us.

How You Can Get Involved

Feeling inspired? Good. Because this isn’t just a story to read. It’s a story to join.

Here are some simple ways you can help:

Donate: Whether it’s R20 or R200, every cent helps feed a child.

Sponsor a Hero: Want to help fund our next Community Hero award or support a local feeding scheme? Get in touch.

Volunteer: Come with us on our next visit. We promise you’ll leave changed.

Share the story: Use your voice. Share this blog. Tell someone about Lecille.

Follow us on social media: Stay updated, get involved, and watch the change happen in real time.

A Final Word from the Heart

We came to feed. We left fed—in spirit, in hope, in inspiration.

There’s a quote we hold dear at Making a Change:
"You may not be able to change the world, but you can change someone’s world."

That’s what Lecille Poole does every single day. That’s what Shirley’s Giving Hands represents. And that’s what we witnessed on a day that we’ll never forget.

Let’s not just celebrate this moment. Let’s build on it. Let’s multiply it.
Let’s keep making a change—one child, one meal, one hero at a time.

Hunger, unemployment, and poverty are everyday realities for many of its residents. Yet amid all the hardship, there are people who rise—not for applause or headlines, but because they must.

One of those people is Tinkie, the founder and driving force behind Tinkies Feedings.

Tinkie started this initiative out of her own kitchen, using what little she had to feed as many as she could. Over the years, her operation has grown—not because she had more money, but because she had more heart. Today, she feeds hundreds every week from her modest home setup, with the help of local volunteers and whatever donations come her way.

When Making a Change learned about her work, we knew immediately: this is someone who deserves to be honoured. A buzz had begun to build in the community. Word had spread that Making a Change was coming back—and this time, we weren’t coming alone. Thanks to our incredible sponsor, Food Socks, we had a massive goal: feed close to 1,000 people in a single day.

It was ambitious. In a country where division, inequality, and hardship are so prevalent, feeding someone is a revolutionary act.

On that day in Serepta, we didn’t just serve food—we built bridges. We reminded people that they matter. That heroes like Tinkie walk among them. That support exists. That hope is still alive.

It reminded us, too, of why we started Making a Change in the first place.

The Bigger Picture: Food Insecurity in South Africa

What we witnessed in Serepta is part of a much larger issue. South Africa’s hunger crisis is worsening. In the heart of Elsies River, Cape Town, one such woman exists. Her name is Gail Reiners, and for years she has been the beating heart behind Faith No Fear, a grassroots feeding initiative built from nothing more than her deep love for her community.

On a warm and emotional day, Making a Change, together with our trusted sponsor Food Socks, had the honour of awarding Gail our third official Community Hero Trophy. It was more than a gesture. It was a moment that symbolised decades of love, sacrifice, and service.

Even as Gail battles with declining health and has had to slow down her operations, she still finds a way to feed children in her street—every single day. Sometimes it's a slice of bread, sometimes a warm meal, but always given with the deepest care.

This is the story of that day—when we came together to help her feed hundreds and remind the people of Elsies River that the spirit of giving is still alive and thriving.

Who Is Gail Reiners?

You won’t find her name in newspapers. She doesn’t have a formal office. There’s no red tape, no grant funding, no massive kitchen staff. But for the children of her street—and the wider community of Elsies River—Gail is a lifeline.

Faith No Fear was born not from ambition, but from urgency. Gail couldn’t ignore the hunger around her. She saw children skipping meals, sleeping hungry, and falling behind in school because they simply didn’t have enough to eat. She couldn’t stand by and do nothing.

So she did what only the most courageous people do—she opened her doors, her heart, and her kitchen to the people around her.

For years, out of her own home, Gail cooked meals for the children in her area. Sometimes using her pension money. Sometimes with donated ingredients. But always with love. Whether she was cooking for 10 or 200, she never turned anyone away.

Recently, due to her declining health, she had to pause her full-scale feedings. But she continues—quietly, powerfully—doing what she can. She feeds children with whatever she has in the house, often giving away the food she would have eaten herself.

Why We Chose Gail as Our Third Community Hero

We first heard about Gail through whispers—“You must go visit the woman in Elsies River who cooks for the children every day.” What we discovered was far more than just a woman with pots and food. We found a mother to a community. A woman with a deep well of compassion. Someone who had every reason to stop giving, and every excuse to put herself first—but didn’t.

At Making a Change, we created the Community Hero Trophy not just to celebrate those doing good, but to shine a light on the quiet champions who work behind the scenes.

Gail never asked to be recognized. In fact, when we told her about the award, she got emotional. “I don’t do this for anything in return,” she said. “I just do it because I can’t stand to see a hungry child.”

That’s exactly the kind of person we want the world to know about. That’s why she had to be our third Community Hero.

The Day We’ll Never Forget

When we arrived in Elsies River, Gail’s house was already surrounded by kids. The atmosphere was electric. Children laughed and played while neighbours helped set up for the food distribution. Gail, even though tired, was right there—smiling, giving directions, and hugging every child who walked through the gate.

With the support of Food Socks, we brought in enough ingredients and supplies to feed hundreds of people that day. It was a beautiful collaboration of purpose.

The scene was unforgettable. Large pots simmered with stew. Volunteers packed plates with rice, vegetables, and bread. Children lined up with patience and excitement, many of them barefoot but beaming.

We took turns serving alongside Gail, and what struck us most was how personally she knew each child. “He doesn’t like too much spice,” she’d whisper. “She’s allergic to eggs.” It wasn’t just food—it was care.

Presenting the Trophy: A Moment of Pure Emotion

After the meals were served and the lines had quieted down, we gathered everyone around. It was time to honour the woman who made it all possible.

Standing in front of her community, surrounded by friends, neighbours, and the children she had fed for years, we presented Gail Reiners with the third official Community Hero Trophy from Making a Change.

She held the trophy in both hands, tears welling in her eyes. “I don’t even know what to say,” she said softly. “All I know is that if I had to do it all over again, I would still feed these children. They are my joy.”

There wasn’t a dry eye in sight.

Her humility, her strength, her grace—this is what true heroism looks like. And to have the opportunity to honour her, on her own street, with her community watching, was one of the proudest moments in Making a Change’s history.

The Role of Food Socks

Our partnership with Food Socks continues to be a game-changer. Their commitment to addressing food insecurity in South Africa goes far beyond providing ingredients. They are strategic allies in the mission to restore dignity to those in need.

Thanks to Food Socks, we were able to deliver everything Gail needed to serve her community on that day—staples like rice, vegetables, beans, and protein-rich ingredients that would stretch to feed the many who came.

Together, we were able to say, “You are not alone.”

The Reality of Hunger in Elsies River

While the day was filled with joy, it also reminded us of a harsh reality. Elsies River, like many communities in the Western Cape, faces a devastating hunger crisis.

Unemployment is high. Gang violence is a daily threat. And access to basic resources like food, electricity, and running water is inconsistent at best.

In places like this, a plate of food can be the difference between despair and survival. And people like Gail are doing the work that others have overlooked.

We met a young boy that day—eight years old, no shoes, and carrying a plastic container. He told us this was his “lucky day” because he got to take food home for his siblings. He couldn’t stop smiling.

It’s a moment that sticks with you. It’s a moment that reminds you why this work matters.

What the Community Had to Say

During the event, we spoke with several neighbours who shared their love and respect for Gail.

“She’s been doing this for years,” one woman told us. “Before she was sick, she used to feed the whole street. And even now, when she’s not well, she still checks in on people. That’s just who she is.”

Another elderly man added, “She’s the mother of this area. She doesn't wait for government help. She just acts.”

It became clear to us that Gail wasn’t just feeding bodies—she was feeding souls.

The Importance of the Community Hero Awards

Gail's story is a shining example of why we started the Community Hero Awards. Too often, the real heroes—the ones who do the work that keeps people alive—are never celebrated.

By giving this award, we aim to do more than offer recognition. We want to raise awareness, increase support, and foster a culture of gratitude.

Every trophy we give is a message to the community: Your leaders matter. Your efforts matter. And we see you.

What’s Next for Faith No Fear

While Gail’s health may have slowed her down, her spirit is unbreakable. She still dreams of expanding Faith No Fear. She wants to one day run a fully equipped community kitchen, create safe spaces for children to study and play, and mentor young people in her neighbourhood.

With the right support, this dream is more than possible—it’s inevitable.

At Making a Change, we’re committed to walking that road with her. From plastic bottles to cigarette butts, every piece of trash that finds its way onto the shore poses a threat to marine life and disrupts the natural beauty of our coastlines. The problem isn't just an eyesore; it's a significant environmental hazard that can have long-lasting effects on our oceans.

The Solution: Joining Forces for a Cleaner Coastline
Recognizing the urgency of this issue, we partnered with the Cape Town Beach Cleanup Crew, a passionate group of volunteers committed to keeping our beaches clean. In our latest initiative, we had the privilege of partnering with an incredible local non-profit based in Cape Town: Shirley’s Giving Hands. This organization has been a quiet force in the community, working tirelessly to support families in crisis, especially those affected by poverty, illness, and violence.

Thanks to the generous support of Food Socks, who provided all the food for the day, we were able to turn this visit into something truly special.

Feeding 200 Children—One Meal, A Thousand Smiles

On the day of the event, the focus was simple but powerful: nourishment, education, and recognition. We fed 200 children from the local community, many of whom face hunger on a daily basis. The atmosphere was electric—filled with laughter, games, and, most importantly, full bellies. Food Socks made it all possible, generously donating enough supplies to ensure that every child walked away with a warm, nutritious meal.

For some of these kids, it was the only proper meal they’d have that week. That’s the reality many families are facing in South Africa today. According to UNICEF, nearly 1 in 3 children in South Africa is stunted due to chronic malnutrition. That’s why feedings like this matter—not just to fill stomachs, but to give these children a moment of joy, comfort, and dignity.

A Trophy for a True Hero

One of the most meaningful parts of the day was when we introduced something new to the Making a Change journey—our Community Hero Trophy. This award is our way of recognizing the unsung heroes who are doing the hard work on the ground, day after day, often without recognition or support.

Our first recipient? None other than Shirley herself, the heart behind Shirley’s Giving Hands. Her unwavering commitment to uplifting others, feeding families, and creating safe spaces for vulnerable people made her the perfect choice for this honor. The look on her face when she received the trophy said it all—this was more than just a gesture. It was a moment of celebration, validation, and visibility for someone who’s been quietly changing lives.

Teaching Safety in a Dangerous World

But we didn’t stop at feeding. We also hosted educational classes for the children, focusing on safety and street-smarts—skills that are sadly necessary for many of them. In areas where violence, abuse, and exploitation are rampant, these classes could be the difference between danger and protection.

We taught them about stranger danger, how to spot unsafe situations, and who to reach out to when they feel scared or unsure. Our goal was to empower them—not just with food in their stomachs, but with knowledge in their minds and confidence in their hearts.

A Day of Hope—and a Step Toward a Better Future

This day was more than an event—it was a glimpse of what’s possible when good people come together for a greater purpose. From Food Socks providing meals, to Shirley’s Giving Hands doing the groundwork, to Making a Change amplifying the mission—this is the kind of collaboration that transforms lives.

We left that day reminded that change doesn’t have to be complicated. Sometimes, it’s a warm meal. Sometimes, it’s a kind word. Sometimes, it’s saying: We see you. We appreciate you. You matter.

If you'd like to support what we do and help us continue these impactful projects, consider joining our Patreon, sharing our stories, or volunteering at our next event.

Because together, we’re not just feeding bodies—we’re Making a Change.

Recently, we embarked on one of our most ambitious projects yet—feeding 2,500 people in Cape Town. This massive undertaking was more than just a single-day event; it was a reflection of the power of community collaboration, dedication, and compassion.

The growing need for assistance in South Africa, particularly in Cape Town, has never been more evident. Cape Town’s homeless population and the number of families experiencing food insecurity have surged in recent years. Hunger remains a pressing issue that requires immediate attention and ongoing support. With this in mind, we knew we had to go bigger than ever before.

The Planning Behind the Project

This project didn't happen overnight. It required months of planning, coordination, and strong partnerships with local organizations to make it a success.

Identifying the Need:
Cape Town is home to thousands of people who struggle to meet their basic needs daily. The effects of unemployment, poverty, and economic disparity have made food insecurity a harsh reality for many. We knew that we had to strategically identify areas that would benefit the most from our feeding event. By partnering with non-profit organizations already doing remarkable work on the ground, we were able to pinpoint specific locations where the need was greatest.

Forming Key Partnerships:
One of the biggest hurdles in projects like this is gathering the necessary resources. This is where the power of collaboration comes in. We partnered with local businesses, corporate sponsors, and individual donors to secure the funding needed to buy food and supplies. We were also fortunate to work with organizations that donated their time, skills, and resources to help us organize this massive feeding event.

Sourcing Supplies:
A crucial part of the preparation was securing enough food to feed 2,500 people. Through generous donations and our Patreon members, we were able to purchase nearly 500 kilograms of groceries—enough to ensure that no one in the line went hungry. Every item we purchased was carefully considered to provide nutritious, filling meals that could make a real difference for those in need.

Coordinating Volunteers:
It’s often said that it takes a village, and in this case, that was true. We rallied an incredible group of volunteers who gave their time and energy to help make the event run smoothly. From setting up cooking stations to distributing meals, our volunteers were the heartbeat of this project. The smiles and gratitude they received in return made the effort even more rewarding.

The Day of the Feeding

The day itself was a testament to the incredible spirit of togetherness in our community. Bright and early, we set up at various locations in Cape Town, from inner-city hubs to informal settlements on the outskirts, where people are especially vulnerable. Our team, alongside the non-profits we partnered with, set up cooking stations and distribution points that would allow us to reach the maximum number of people.

A Heartfelt Moment:
As we began serving the meals, the reality of the situation hit home. Families, elderly individuals, and children lined up, each one facing their own struggles, but united in their hope for a better future. It was an emotional day, one filled with gratitude, humility, and an understanding of the hardships these people endure.

One of the most touching moments came when we spoke with a mother who, for the first time in days, was able to give her children a hot meal. She expressed her gratitude for the food, not just because it would sustain them for the day, but because it gave them a sense of hope—something often in short supply for families in her situation. These are the stories that fuel our determination to keep pushing forward, to keep making a change.

The Bigger Picture

Our feeding event was more than just handing out food—it was about creating awareness around the issues that affect so many South Africans. While it’s easy to see hunger as a one-dimensional problem, it’s often the symptom of larger systemic issues, including poverty, unemployment, and lack of access to basic services.

Why Initiatives Like This Matter
The statistics surrounding food insecurity in South Africa are stark. According to recent reports, nearly 20% of South African households experience hunger, with over half of the population considered food insecure. In Cape Town specifically, a growing homeless population and economic instability have only worsened the situation. Feeding events like ours are essential because they provide not only nourishment but also visibility to those whose struggles are often overlooked.

This initiative, like many others led by Making a Change, is a reminder that small actions collectively lead to significant outcomes. While our feeding event helped 2,500 people for a day, it also inspired conversations about long-term solutions to hunger in Cape Town and across South Africa.

Looking Towards the Future

While the event was a success, it also highlighted the need for more sustainable solutions. Providing meals is important, but we also need to focus on creating opportunities that can lift people out of poverty in the long run. Whether it's job creation, housing support, or access to education, there are numerous ways we can continue making a change.

Making a Change is committed to furthering our work in Cape Town and eventually expanding to other parts of South Africa. We plan to continue hosting feeding events, partnering with local organizations, and using our platform to raise awareness about the critical issues facing our country. Our work won’t stop at feeding people—we want to see communities thrive.

Thank You for Being Part of the Change

None of this would be possible without the incredible support of our followers, donors, and sponsors. Whether you donated to the cause, volunteered your time, or simply shared our message on social media, you are an essential part of Making a Change. Together, we can continue to push for a more equitable and just society—one where no one is left behind.

If you’d like to get involved in our future projects, please consider becoming a Patreon member, donating, or volunteering with us. Despite its name, the reality for many living in Happy Valley is far from joyful. The area is home to countless families struggling to make ends meet, with hunger being one of the most pressing issues they face daily.

As part of our ongoing mission to support underprivileged communities, we partnered with local organizations and volunteers to host a large feeding initiative aimed at providing relief to those who need it most. Thanks to the donations and support from our Patreon members and sponsors, we were able to secure enough food to feed over 1,000 people.

A Day of Service

The day began early with our team and volunteers gathering supplies, preparing food, and setting up in a central part of the community. The energy was high as we worked together, and soon a crowd began to gather. Mothers, fathers, children, and elderly members of the community lined up in the hopes of receiving a hot meal, something that is not always guaranteed in their daily lives.

What struck us most was the warmth and gratitude we received from the people of Happy Valley. Despite the challenges they face, there was an undeniable sense of community and resilience. As we served each person, we had the chance to engage with them and hear their stories—stories of hardship, hope, and the fight to survive.

Why Feeding Initiatives Like This Matter

In South Africa, an estimated 30 million people face food insecurity, with many unable to access regular, nutritious meals. The communities hit hardest by poverty, like those in Happy Valley, often suffer from a lack of resources and government support. This is why feeding initiatives are not just important—they are necessary.

At Making a Change, we believe in not only addressing immediate needs but also working toward long-term solutions. Our goal is to raise awareness around poverty and hunger while also inspiring others to get involved, whether through donations, volunteering, or simply sharing the message.

The Impact of Your Support

Feeding 1,000 people is no small task, and it’s something we could not have achieved without the help of our supporters. Each plate of food we served was a direct result of the generous contributions from our community. Whether it was a monetary donation, a sponsorship, or simply spreading the word about our work, every bit of support made a difference.

The impact of this feeding initiative goes beyond just the meals served that day. It provided a moment of relief for families facing food insecurity and gave them the reassurance that they are not forgotten. It also reminded us all of the power of community—when people come together, real change is possible.

Looking Forward

This project in Happy Valley was a success, but the work doesn’t stop here. There are countless other communities in Cape Town and beyond facing similar challenges. At Making a Change, we are committed to continuing our efforts to support those in need, one meal at a time.

If you’d like to be part of our next feeding initiative, or if you want to help us make an even bigger impact, you can contribute by becoming a Patreon member, donating, or volunteering with us. Every bit of support counts, and together, we can make a real difference in the lives of those who need it most.

Stay connected with us for updates on our next project, and thank you for helping us bring hope to places like Happy Valley!

Join us in Making a Change:

Follow us on social media to stay updated on our latest initiatives

Donate to support future projects like this

Volunteer and help us create positive change in communities across South Africa

#MakingAChange #FeedingInitiative #HappyValley #CapeTownCommunity #FightingHunger #SouthAfrica #CommunitySupport #PovertyAwareness #HopeInAction
