Feeding 200 Kids in this Struggling Community
At Making a Change, every project we take on is driven by one powerful goal—uplifting the communities that need us most. In our latest initiative, we had the privilege of partnering with an incredible local non-profit based in Cape Town: Shirley’s Giving Hands. This organization has been a quiet force in the community, working tirelessly to support families in crisis, especially those affected by poverty, illness, and violence.
Thanks to the generous support of Food Socks, who provided all the food for the day, we were able to turn this visit into something truly special.
Feeding 200 Children—One Meal, A Thousand Smiles
On the day of the event, the focus was simple but powerful: nourishment, education, and recognition. We fed 200 children from the local community, many of whom face hunger on a daily basis. The atmosphere was electric—filled with laughter, games, and, most importantly, full bellies. Food Socks made it all possible, generously donating enough supplies to ensure that every child walked away with a warm, nutritious meal.
For some of these kids, it was the only proper meal they’d have that week. That’s the reality many families are facing in South Africa today. According to UNICEF, nearly 1 in 3 children in South Africa is stunted due to chronic malnutrition. That’s why feedings like this matter—not just to fill stomachs, but to give these children a moment of joy, comfort, and dignity.
A Trophy for a True Hero
One of the most meaningful parts of the day was when we introduced something new to the Making a Change journey—our Community Hero Trophy. This award is our way of recognizing the unsung heroes who are doing the hard work on the ground, day after day, often without recognition or support.
Our first recipient? None other than Shirley herself, the heart behind Shirley’s Giving Hands. Her unwavering commitment to uplifting others, feeding families, and creating safe spaces for vulnerable people made her the perfect choice for this honor. The look on her face when she received the trophy said it all—this was more than just a gesture. It was a moment of celebration, validation, and visibility for someone who’s been quietly changing lives.
Teaching Safety in a Dangerous World
But we didn’t stop at feeding. We also hosted educational classes for the children, focusing on safety and street-smarts—skills that are sadly necessary for many of them. In areas where violence, abuse, and exploitation are rampant, these classes could be the difference between danger and protection.
We taught them about stranger danger, how to spot unsafe situations, and who to reach out to when they feel scared or unsure. Our goal was to empower them—not just with food in their stomachs, but with knowledge in their minds and confidence in their hearts.
A Day of Hope—and a Step Toward a Better Future
This day was more than an event—it was a glimpse of what’s possible when good people come together for a greater purpose. From Food Socks providing meals, to Shirley’s Giving Hands doing the groundwork, to Making a Change amplifying the mission—this is the kind of collaboration that transforms lives.
We left that day reminded that change doesn’t have to be complicated. Sometimes, it’s a warm meal. Sometimes, it’s a kind word. Sometimes, it’s saying: We see you. We appreciate you. You matter.
